Your support saves lives!
Hunger is painful. Malnutrition is deadly, and, according to the U.N., the largest single contributor to disease. And yet in Haiti, many children go hungry every day and one in five children is considered severely malnourished. Similarly, a lack of adequate perinatal care in Haiti, where skilled personnel attends only 1/3 of births, results in an infant mortality rate of 57 per 1000, and a maternal mortality rate of 350 per 100,000 live births. And of 1000 children age one, 31 do not reach their fifth birthday; that number almost triples in rural areas.
In sum, Haiti, a country just hours away from the United States, has the highest rates of infant, under-five and maternal mortality in the Western hemisphere.
At HUFH, saving lives never takes a day off! Despite the deteriorating conditions in Haiti, our lifesaving health care programs continue without interruption: our team on the ground stops at nothing to protect the health of others.
In the words of one of our employees:
"Sickness doesn't know strikes and insecurity. The poorest children and their families are always looking for help, so we need to be there to help."
